• Country: Afghanistan
  • Date: Jun 2013 - Aug 2015
  • Program Type: Quality of Education and Learning
  • Partner: Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN)
The overall objective of the program was to improve the learning opportunities for and developmental outcomes of young children, particularly girls, in Baghlan, Bamyan and Badakhshan, and to increase their chances of completing Grade 12. Furthermore, it aimed to strengthen the early grades levels of education in Afghanistan by providing pre-primary aged children, of whom 50% were girls, access to quality pre-school education to improve school readiness. The program also worked towards improving government school capacity, to provide effective foundation in literacy and numeracy in Grade 1 and 2, and increasing school retention rates, particularly amongst girls.
The program supported and promoted sustainable quality learning opportunities and developmental outcomes for rural marginalized children aged 4-8 by:
• Supporting and/or establishing 100 community-based pre-schools
• Improving early grades literacy and numeracy education and creating “child-friendly” environments for Grade 1 and 2 students in 70 government schools
• Developing supportive, literate communities through adult literacy classes, parenting classes and radio programs
