Dubai Cares supported a WASH-in-Schools program that benefited 319,862 school children in Mali. WaterAid made use of its Regional Learning Centres to champion low-cost sanitation technologies, conducting research, identifying solutions and leading cross-program learning and knowledge-sharing, and targeted 5 communities across Koulikoro and the capital city Bamako. Oxfam ensured the core values of their strategy were achieved, which included participation, equity, innovation and transparency, through a state of the art appraisal of both the national strategy for water and sanitation sector and the strategic plan for hygiene education in schools. Whereas, UNICEF focused on providing the basic sanitation and environmental facilities to ensure a healthy and adequate learning environment, notably by enabling school children and staff to access appropriate and clean latrines The program provided water and ensured soap provision for handwashing. It also provided safe drinking water from a protected groundwater source (spring, well or borehole), or from a treated supply, and kept it safe until it is consumed.
