As part of the Reading Nation Campaign, an initiative launched in 2016 by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, Dubai Cares was selected as one of the main partners to manage and implement the Campaign. The Reading Nation Campaign aims at distributing books to children in refugee camps and schools in need around the world. The main objective of the Reading Nation campaign is to increase the access to high quality, culturally relevant and developmentally appropriate books for children to promote life-long reading habits and support them in transforming their lives through reading. In partnership with Room to Read, Dubai Cares is developing and distributing quality-reading materials, holding reading activities and organizing training for educators and government stakeholders in primary government schools in India, Jordan, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Tanzania and Vietnam. Dubai Cares, in partnership with ARED, is distributing books to children from Grade 1 to 6 in Senegal. The distributed books are in the two main local languages, Wolof and Pular, and in French. Access to these books is allowing students to strengthen their reading skills. Through its partnership with Lamsa FZ LLC, Dubai Cares is helping empower children’s learning and imaginative abilities in Lebanon by distributing books and stationary materials in schools and refugee camps. Books are also being distributed to children in Liberia, Morocco, Socotra and Jordan by Beacon of Hope. In addition to distributing books, they are also supplying educational solar light kits. In partnership with Dar Rabie Publishing, 15 book titles of Arabic children’s books are being printed for children aged 4-12 years old. They will be distributed by “Wanna Read?” to local hospitals in Dubai, Fujairah, Ras Al Khaimah and Sharjah to create libraries in the pediatrician departments. Dubai Cares has also partnered with Al Hudhud Publishing and Distribution to distribute storybooks and hold teacher, parent and caregiver workshops for Syrian refugee children in Jordanian cities in addition to refugee camps. The program aims to facilitate early Arabic language development, promote health and well-being and positive family interactions and support children’s literacy.
