The children of central southern Barisal Division of Bangladesh faced tremendous hardships during the monsoon season in 2010. Due to heavy rainfall during the month of July, flooding inundated the area surrounding the school which remained water-logged for more than one month. Although the children of the Chokdarbari SHIKHON School in Vedorganj Upazila of Shariatpur District which is supported by the Dubai Cares education program in Bangladesh live nearby, they could not access the school because their path was three feet under water, a formidable obstacle to a second grade child. The school became an island and access was severely restricted for almost 80 percent of the children.
Eager to attend school, the children devised their own solution by putting their books and clothing in cooking pots and swimming as a group to school. This shocked the entire community and with the support of Dubai Cares, community members built a boat to safely take the children to school and back. The students, teachers and members of the community were extremely thankful to Dubai Cares for extending the SHIKHON Education Program to their community and also making the access to school more convenient and safer during the monsoons.
