Her Excellency Reem Al Hashimy, UAE Minister of State and Chairperson of Dubai Cares, recently received Dr. Helene D. Gayle, President and CEO of CARE, on her first visit to the United Arab Emirates. Also attending the meeting was Tariq Al Gurg, Chief Executive Officer of Dubai Cares, the UAE based philanthropic organization founded by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai.

The meeting was an opportunity for Dubai Cares and CARE, a leading humanitarian organization fighting global poverty, to discuss their partnership and joint programs and also renew their shared commitment to primary education in developing countries and the United Nations Millennium Development Goals.

Programs implemented by Dubai Cares and CARE:

HAITI

Since August 2010, Dubai Cares and CARE have been providing assistance to earthquake affected children in Haiti. This program focuses on both immediate assistance as well as longer-term rehabilitation efforts in the education sector. Dubai Cares is working in areas directly and indirectly affected by the earthquake according to needs in order to assist 82,000 earthquake-affected children.

INDONESIA

Launched in April 2011, the Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH)-in-Schools Empowerment (WISE) Program is designed to address the problem of inadequate access to WASH facilities in schools, poor hygiene practices of students and families, and the low commitment and prioritization of local government to improve sanitation and hygiene conditions in schools. The program includes constructing WASH facilities that are child-friendly, gender sensitive, use low cost technology and promote sustainable maintenance; supporting WASH education and promotion initiatives in school and communities through existing structures; strengthening the capacity of school committees, local government and community structures in the integration and sustainability of WASH activities/facilities in schools; and supporting the development and implementation of a monitoring, evaluation and documentation system (knowledge management), active learning exchange and the development of a road map for scale up of successful interventions in the future.

MALI

Dubai Cares and CARE partnered to implement a Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH)-in-Schools program in Mali, launched in June 2010, to construct WASH facilities; promote behavior change on sanitation and hygiene using the community-led total sanitation approach with a special focus on schools; reinforce changes in behavior nationally and at schools; build capacity of government and build supply chains; mobilize provision of water points and washrooms; provide advocacy at local and national levels for policy change or enforcement; and monitor for iterative learning and sustainability.

YEMEN

Since June 2008, Dubai Cares has been working with CARE in Yemen to increase the quality of education to primary age children, with special emphasis placed on girls. The program also includes construction of primary schools in the underserved areas, training of teachers, school principals, teacher assistants and school supervisors and establishing parent councils. As part of the program, Dubai Cares is also introducing early childhood development centers, training caregivers and providing water as well as WASH services to communities.
